The finding confirms that overshooting the 1.5C goal set in the 2015 Paris agreement is now unavoidable, and the world is likely to pass that threshold within the next few years.

The report, released by the Nairobi-based agency, warns that every fraction of additional temperature rise intensifies destructive extreme weather, accelerates glacier melt, drives ecosystem loss, and increases the submersion risk for islands and coastal cities. Scientists behind the assessment describe the outlook as one with «no good outcomes», though they stress that the severity of consequences depends on how far and how long temperatures exceed the target.

Despite the sobering projection, the report notes that some progress has been made in addressing the human-caused climate crisis driven by the burning of fossil fuels. However, that progress remains insufficient to prevent the overshoot that scientists now consider inevitable.

Returning to that level would require sustained negative emissions, meaning the world must remove more carbon from the atmosphere than it adds.
