Climate impacts across the Eastern Himalayas are no longer episodic events but structural conditions, according to conservation groups working in the region. The shift demands responses that match the scale of the challenge, moving beyond isolated projects toward integrated strategies that link ecosystems and the human communities that depend on them.

Under the Mountains to Mangroves initiative, three approaches are designed to work together. Restoring mangroves aims to reduce coastal risk, diversifying agriculture helps communities withstand increasing climate variability, and protecting forests regulates water, soil, and biodiversity across the landscape. The program treats these efforts as interconnected parts of a single system rather than separate environmental projects.

The initiative brings together a range of partner organizations with expertise in ecology, conservation, and community engagement. Partners include the Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment, the Bhutan Ecological Society, the Bhutan Trust Fund, Friendship NGO, TERI India, the Red Panda Network Icon Fellowship, and Value Network Ventures. Each organization contributes specialized knowledge of local ecosystems and the social structures that shape how communities use natural resources.

Funding for the work comes from a coalition of corporate and philanthropic supporters, including Inditex, the S&P Global Foundation, Mastercard's Priceless Planet Coalition, and The Coca-Cola Foundation. Their backing supports field operations, research, and community programs across the region.

The Eastern Himalayas are recognized as a biodiversity hotspot, home to rare species and vital watersheds that supply water to millions of people downstream. Forests in the region regulate water flows, prevent soil erosion, and provide habitat for wildlife, including the endangered red panda. Mangrove ecosystems along the coast serve as natural barriers against storms and rising seas while supporting fisheries and local livelihoods.

Agricultural diversification is a key component of the strategy. Farmers in the region face shifting rainfall patterns, temperature changes, and more frequent extreme weather events. By introducing a wider range of crops and farming techniques, communities can reduce their vulnerability to any single failure and maintain food security under changing conditions.

The program's systemic approach reflects a broader recognition in climate science that natural and human systems cannot be managed in isolation. Protecting forests upstream supports water quality and flow downstream, which in turn affects coastal ecosystems and the communities that rely on them. Mangrove restoration, similarly, depends on healthy watersheds and sustainable land use inland.
