Award-winning entomologist Dino Martins, celebrated for his research on pollinators, is turning attention to some of nature’s most misunderstood creatures: parasites. In his latest book, the evolutionary biologist argues that even the most gruesome parasites, from sex-loving hookworms to zombie-inducing fungi, perform vital ecological functions that deserve recognition rather than revulsion.
Martins, who grew up in biodiversity-rich western Kenya, has long been fascinated by the miniature world beneath our feet. His formative years were spent exploring Mt Elgon, Kakamega forest, and the Kerio valley with his foster parents, Joe and Sarah Ellen. There, he observed dung beetles rolling mounds of cattle dung, safari ants migrating across the plains, and male butterflies sucking salt and nutrients from mud to produce “nuptial gifts” during mating. These early encounters shaped his career as an entomologist and evolutionary biologist, leading him to champion the small and often overlooked.
Parasites, Martins explains, are not merely villains but key players in ecosystems. They help regulate host populations, influence behavior, and drive evolutionary adaptations. For instance, hookworms, which have a notorious reputation for causing disease, also play a role in shaping immune systems and have been studied for potential therapeutic applications. Similarly, parasitic wasps lay eggs inside caterpillars, controlling pest populations and benefiting agriculture. Martins’ book delves into these complex relationships, highlighting how parasites contribute to biodiversity and ecological balance.
One of the most striking examples Martins explores is the “zombie ant” fungus, which infects ants and manipulates their behavior to spread its spores. Another example is the tongue-eating louse, a parasite that replaces a fish’s tongue and becomes a functional substitute, allowing the fish to survive.
