As high summer returns to the UK, public health officials are once again issuing familiar warnings about the dangers of sunlight, urging people to seek shade and cover up. But a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that the conventional wisdom may be dangerously incomplete: moderate sun exposure, enjoyed safely, appears to confer significant health benefits that many people are missing out on.

Rowan Jacobsen, a former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a media fellow at the Nova Institute for Health in Baltimore, has spent the past nine years researching the science of sunlight. His new book, In Defense of Sunlight: The Surprising Science of Sun Exposure, published this month, synthesizes hundreds of studies to argue that the pendulum has swung too far toward sun avoidance.

«After years of such advice, most members of the public naturally assume that the science connecting sun exposure to poor health is well established, so people are often shocked to learn that the opposite is true: those who spend more time in the sun tend to be healthier,» Jacobsen writes. «A lot healthier.»

The book challenges the dominant public health narrative that has dominated for decades, which emphasizes the link between ultraviolet radiation and skin cancer. While extreme exposure should still be avoided, Jacobsen contends that the blanket recommendation to avoid the sun entirely may be causing more harm than good.

Jacobsen first stumbled upon the research nine years ago while reading studies that suggested a correlation between sun exposure and lower rates of chronic disease. Intrigued, he began a deep dive into the scientific literature, eventually compiling evidence that links moderate sun exposure to improved cardiovascular health, better immune function, enhanced mood, and reduced mortality from all causes.

One of the key mechanisms, Jacobsen explains, is the production of vitamin D, which is synthesized in the skin upon exposure to sunlight. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to a range of health problems, including weakened bones, increased risk of infections, and higher rates of certain cancers. But the benefits of sunlight may extend beyond vitamin D alone. Emerging research suggests that sunlight triggers the release of nitric oxide in the skin, which can lower blood pressure and improve circulation. It also influences the body's circadian rhythms, helping to regulate sleep and hormone production.

The book also examines the historical context of sun exposure. For most of human evolution, people spent the majority of their time outdoors, and the human body adapted to function optimally with regular sunlight. The modern shift toward indoor lifestyles, combined with aggressive sun avoidance campaigns, may have disrupted these biological adaptations.

Jacobsen acknowledges that the relationship between sun exposure and skin cancer is real and should not be dismissed. However, he argues that the risk has been overstated for the general population, particularly for people with darker skin tones, who have natural protection against UV radiation. The one-size-fits-all advice to avoid the sun, he says, fails to account for individual differences in skin type, latitude, and lifestyle.

The book has already generated discussion among public health experts, some of whom welcome the nuanced perspective. «We need to move beyond the simplistic message that all sun exposure is bad,» said one reviewer. «The science is clear that moderate, sensible exposure has real benefits.»

Jacobsen does not advocate for reckless sunbathing. He recommends that people learn their skin type, pay attention to local UV index forecasts, and aim for short, regular exposures — typically 10 to 30 minutes a day for fair-skinned individuals — without sunscreen on small areas of skin, during times when the sun is not at its peak intensity. After that, he advises covering up or using sunscreen to prevent burning.

The book also addresses the psychological benefits of sunlight. Exposure to natural light has been shown to improve mood, reduce symptoms of depression, and increase overall well-being. Seasonal affective disorder, a form of depression that occurs during the darker months, is a well-known example of what happens when people do not get enough light.

Jacobsen hopes that his book will help shift the conversation from fear to balance. «We don't have to fear the sun nearly as much as we thought,» he writes. «In fact, most of us could benefit from a bit more exposure.»

As the debate over sun safety continues, Jacobsen's work adds a timely and evidence-based perspective to a topic that affects nearly everyone. Whether the public health establishment will revise its guidelines remains to be seen, but the science, he argues, is increasingly clear: sunlight, in moderation, is not the enemy.
