A newly discovered species of nonvenomous snake from New Guinea has been formally named after Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash, a musician known for his lifelong passion for reptiles. The reddish-brown groundsnake, now designated Lielaphis slashi, was confirmed as a species new to science through genetic testing and comparisons of physical characteristics.
The snake had not been formally recognized before, despite its distinct appearance and genetic profile. Researchers used DNA analysis alongside detailed examinations of the animal's anatomy to establish that it differs from all previously described groundsnakes. The species is nonvenomous and is believed to feed on slippery lizards and reptile eggs, possibly using enlarged rear teeth to secure its prey.
