A previously unknown monkey species has been identified deep within the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, based on a combination of distinctive canopy calls, a partial photograph, and genetic analysis. The discovery, announced by scientists, marks a rare addition to the primate family tree and raises immediate conservation concerns: the new species may already be at risk of extinction.

Researchers encountered the primate during fieldwork in remote forested areas of the Congo Basin, one of the world’s most biodiverse but threatened ecosystems. They recorded unusual vocalizations from the treetops, captured a partial image of the animal, and collected DNA samples that later confirmed it represents a distinct species.
