Regularly reading for pleasure is associated with better memory, greater empathy and improved mental health, according to a new review that pooled evidence from tens of thousands of participants. The findings suggest that picking up a book may act as a form of cognitive training, strengthening brain regions that support thinking and emotional control.

Barbara Sahakian at the University of Cambridge and her colleagues combined data from five surveys and eight long-term studies, according to the research published in Psychological Medicine. Many of the studies linked reading for enjoyment to greater volume of grey matter — the brain tissue involved in thinking and memory — and to stronger communication between different brain regions.

That structural effect may be how reading builds what researchers call cognitive reserve, Sahakian said. Cognitive reserve is the brain’s ability to defend against ageing and adapt to damage, and it is heavily shaped by lifestyle. The review suggests that habitual reading may help the brain maintain function over time.

The mental health findings were equally consistent. One study found that children who began reading for pleasure early in life had moderately larger brain surface areas and volumes in regions linked to emotional control. Sahakian noted that this feels particularly important amid evidence that youth mental health is worse today than it was decades ago.

Across the pooled research, reading for pleasure was linked to reduced stress, greater empathy, enhanced wellbeing and reduced loneliness. In childhood specifically, it was associated with better attention, memory, executive function, academic achievement and fewer mental health problems. Among older adults, reading was tied to a lower risk of cognitive decline.

Falk Huettig at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands, who was not involved in the research, described reading as a cognitive workout. The comparison underscores how the simple act of following a narrative or absorbing information may engage multiple mental systems at once.

Reading fiction may be particularly important, the researchers suggest, because it exposes people to narratives that let the brain practice how it might respond to life events, improving its prediction abilities. It may also create a sense of connection to characters, which could reduce feelings of loneliness. Non-fiction, by contrast, may stimulate different parts of the brain, Sahakian said.

What matters most, she added, is that people read for enjoyment, because they will then read more often and for longer. The type of book appears less important than the habit itself. Whether it is a novel by Charles Dickens or Jackie Collins, the benefits seem to come from regular engagement with reading.

The review arrives at a time when reading for pleasure has plummeted over the past 20 years. Researchers suggest the decline may partly stem from people spending more time on social media. The drop is notable because the same period has seen growing concern about attention, memory and mental health across age groups.

The findings do not prove that reading directly causes better brain health, but the consistency of the associations across many studies points to a meaningful relationship. The research team’s analysis adds to a growing body of evidence that everyday habits shape cognitive reserve and emotional resilience over the lifespan.

For children, the results suggest that encouraging early enjoyment of books could support attention, memory and academic achievement while reducing mental health problems. For older adults, maintaining a reading habit may be one accessible way to help lower the risk of cognitive decline.

Sahakian’s advice is straightforward: read for enjoyment. That approach, the evidence indicates, is more likely to produce a lasting habit — and the longer and more often people read, the more opportunity there is for the brain to benefit.
