Planned cuts to science funding in Britain, including the decision to stop funding the Lovell telescope at Jodrell Bank Observatory from March 2028, will damage the country’s international scientific standing, researchers warn.

In a letter responding to a recent Guardian editorial, scientists argue that the decision is shortsighted and misunderstands how modern astronomy works. Astronomy, they note, is no longer just physics. It now brings together physics, chemistry, biology and computing to understand how the universe evolved and how humanity came to exist. The universe, they add, is an inexpensive laboratory for studying physical, chemical and biological processes under conditions that cannot be reproduced on Earth.

Understanding how galaxies formed and evolved requires complementary observations across the radio, optical and infrared spectrum, and the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, the letter states.

One researcher who worked as a PhD student at Jodrell Bank in the 1960s recalls how the observatory’s innovations transformed radio astronomy. Jodrell played a pioneering role in developing long-baseline radio interferometry, a technique that links separate telescopes to create virtual telescopes thousands of miles across. Removing the Lovell telescope from this network would weaken its ability to produce radio images with sharpness comparable to that achieved by billion-pound space observatories such as Hubble, the researcher warns.

The Lovell telescope, named after its creator Bernard Lovell, has been a landmark of British science since it began operating in 1957. It is one of the largest steerable radio telescopes in the world and has been used for decades of research, including tracking early space missions and studying pulsars, quasars and other cosmic phenomena.
