NASA's premier planet-hunting telescope, the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), has gone quiet — but the silence is entirely by design. The spacecraft has entered a planned communication blackout period, during which it will focus on downlinking scientific data and recalibrating its sensitive instruments.
The temporary silence, which began earlier this week, is a routine operational procedure that allows TESS to dedicate full power and bandwidth to transmitting the vast amounts of data it collects while scanning nearly the entire sky. During this period, the spacecraft does not send or receive routine commands from mission control at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
TESS, launched in April 2018, is designed to detect exoplanets by monitoring the brightness of thousands of stars simultaneously. When a planet passes in front of its host star — an event called a transit — the telescope records a slight dip in starlight, revealing the planet's presence and allowing scientists to calculate its size and orbit. Over its primary mission and subsequent extended missions, TESS has identified more than 7,000 exoplanet candidates, with over 400 confirmed planets to date.
The current silence is part of TESS's regular observing cycle. The spacecraft operates in a highly elliptical orbit around Earth that is synchronized with the Moon's orbit to maintain stability and minimize interference from Earth's magnetic field. Mission engineers planned this blackout well in advance, ensuring that all critical commands were uploaded beforehand and that the spacecraft's autonomous systems can handle any anomalies. TESS is equipped with fault protection software that can put the spacecraft into a safe mode if necessary, though no such events are expected during this routine period.
The planet hunter resumed operations after a similar silence earlier this year and continues to deliver valuable data on rocky planets, multi-planet systems, and even worlds in the habitable zones of their stars. Its findings have reshaped astronomers' understanding of planetary formation and the prevalence of small, potentially habitable worlds throughout the Milky Way.
Scientists eagerly await the next batch of data from TESS, which is expected to arrive once the communication link is reestablished. The data will be processed by the TESS Science Office at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and made publicly available through the Mikulski Archive for Space Telescopes at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore.
TESS's extended mission, which began in 2022, focuses on revisiting regions of the sky already surveyed to detect longer-period planets and to study stellar variability, supernovae, and other transient phenomena. The telescope's ability to maintain a steady gaze on large swaths of the sky makes it an invaluable tool for time-domain astronomy.
While the temporary communication blackout may raise questions among space enthusiasts, NASA officials have emphasized that the silence is not a cause for concern. In a statement earlier this year, the agency described TESS as «healthy and operating nominally,» with all systems performing within expected parameters.
The next communication window is expected to open within the coming week, after which TESS will resume its relentless search for worlds beyond our solar system. Until then, the planet hunter will continue its work in silence.
