Melons eaten in China nearly a thousand years ago were not the sugary fruit sold in supermarkets today, and they likely arrived from South Asia rather than being domesticated locally, according to DNA analysis of ancient seeds recovered from a Song Dynasty port in southeastern China.
Researchers led by Susanne Renner and Xinyi Liu of Washington University in St. Louis worked with an international team to extract and study genetic material from seeds unearthed at Shuomen Gugang, a port that operated during the Song Dynasty between A.D. 960 and 1279. The excavation also turned up porcelain and remnants of imported fruits, including grapes, olives, lychee, and kiwi, indicating the site was plugged into long-distance trade networks.
The genetic evidence ruled out the possibility that the melon seeds came from plants domesticated locally. Instead, the team weighed two possible routes of arrival: a northern path along the Silk Road, or a southern path tied to tea trade routes. «Both corridors are historically plausible, as demonstrated by the movement of other food resources,» Liu said.
Archaeological evidence, however, favors the southern route. Liu noted that the earliest melon remains found in China come from Han and pre-Han royal tombs in the south, predating comparable finds at northern Silk Road sites by roughly 800 to 1,000 years. That gap in the record makes a southern introduction more likely, even though both trade corridors were active.
The study also reconstructed what these early melons looked like and how they tasted. According to the analysis, the fruit had a yellow peel, light-green flesh, and only a mildly sweet flavor, a marked contrast with the intensely sweet cultivars bred in later centuries.
Liu drew a connection between the melon's appearance and the aesthetic traditions of East Asia. «The light-green color resonates with the fine-toned color of Chinese jade and with the glazes of celadon porcelain, both highly valued in East Asian aesthetic traditions,» he said. He concluded that the popularity of the color and shape may reflect the melon's symbolic associations with fertility and abundance.
The findings add to a growing body of research on how food plants moved across Asia through trade, diplomacy, and migration. Ports such as Shuomen Gugang served as entry points for goods that reshaped local diets and, in some cases, local agriculture. The presence of imported fruits alongside the melon seeds reinforces the picture of a cosmopolitan trading hub where luxury goods and everyday foods circulated together.
The research was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The seeds themselves were recovered during excavation of the port site, and the international team's DNA work places the melon's story within the wider history of South Asian crops that traveled eastward along maritime and overland routes.
For archaeologists, the study illustrates how genetic analysis can complement traditional excavation evidence. Trade routes can be inferred from pottery, coins, and written records, but ancient DNA can identify the actual plants involved and trace where they came from. In this case, the combination of genetic data and tomb chronology shifted the balance toward a southern origin for one of the world's most widely cultivated fruits.
The melon's transformation from a mildly sweet, jade-colored fruit into the sweet varieties familiar today reflects centuries of selective breeding, a process that accelerated as the plant spread across Asia and beyond. The Song Dynasty seeds offer a rare snapshot of that journey at a time when China's ports were among the busiest nodes in the medieval world economy.
